March is Endometriosis Month

Pelvic pain, heavy periods, migraines, incontinence, painful sex, confusion, being told you are a "drama queen" or "hysterical"......Sound familiar? If it is not familiar to you...it is very likely someone you know and love experiences this daily, weekly, monthly and may have done since she was very young.

Endometriosis is a painful condition that effects many women (approx 1 in 10) and there is so far no cure. Pain is excruciating and is debilitating. It is felt often in the pelvic/uterine region but can be experienced all over the body. Endometriosis is when the wall of the uterus grows OUTSIDE of it...sometimes adhering to the bowel and other organs causing pain and dysfunction. It is also associated with infertility.

It can take YEARS for a woman to get a diagnosis...despite probably experiencing the symptoms from the onset of her VERY FIRST PERIOD.

Most women, if they are "lucky" enough to be diagnosed, are only offered pharmaceutical pain relief, contraceptives or for some surgery to remove the tissue-none of which is optimal and often doesn't help.

HOWEVER!!! there is hope! Many women find relief through complimentary methods such as acupuncture, massage and of course CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY. I have a few clients that come to see me purely to treat Endo...but of course their entire body is addressed ;)

CLIENT STORY (name changed*) *Alice is a 30 year old mum of two who has experienced painful and very heavy periods since she was 14 years old. She didn't tell anyone because she thought it was "normal". However as they years went by the pain was becoming unbearable. She would be nauseated, get diarrhea and had one fainting episode from blood loss and pain. Sex had always been painful. It took her and her husband 3 years to conceive their first child. After her pregnancy the symptoms were worse.

Alice had the common story of bouncing from GP to specialist and back again. She was finally diagnosed at 25 years old and offered oral contraceptives to help with the heaviness of her periods. She suffered with side effects from these and the pain was still constant. Her usual regime of pain relief included codeine, paracetamol, ibuprofen and naprogesics. Alice initially sought my help for daily migraines which are common for Endometriosis sufferers. We had a set of three consecutive craniosacral therapy sessions (one a week). After the first Alice noted her migraines were less intense and she was sleeping better. After the second she noted she felt "more connected"to her body and her overall pain sensations were reduced. Approximately two weeks after her third treatment she rand to let me know her period had arrived and it doesn't even really hurt...I have only had to take panadol!!! and my husband and I were intimate once since I saw you and it didn't hurt AT ALL". I now see Alice once a month just before we expect her period to arrive and this has helped keep her symptoms well managed. She has also sought support from a local homeopath and started Pilates...something that used to be to painful for her.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, please consider contacting me or a Craniosacral Therapist in your area. Happy March!!
